Marine osmium isotope record during the Carnian “pluvial episode” (Late Triassic) in the pelagic Panthalassa Ocean

The Carnian Pluvial Episode (CPE) was a global environmental change and biotic crisis that occurred during the (Late Triassic). climate CPE characterized by short-lived period of extreme rainfall, an extinction marine taxa is known to have latest Julian (i.e. early Carnian). Although these events are considered been caused Wrangellia Flood Basalt (FB) volcanism, existing studies found little direct evidence support this. We investigated temporal relationship between eruption FB using high-resolution microfossil biostratigraphy paleo-seawater Os isotope data Upper Triassic bedded chert succession from accretionary complex in Japan, which accumulated pelagic deep-sea environment equatorial region Panthalassa Ocean. Our biostratigraphic analysis, based on conodonts radiolarians, osmium show: (i) continuous decline initial ratios (187Os/188Osi) Julian; (ii) low 187Os/188Osi late (iii) abrupt increase at end Julian. decrease throughout suggests increased input unradiogenic into ocean. Moreover, redox-sensitive elements, such as V U, abruptly Julian, first reducing conditions within Marine anoxic event has recognized widespread deposition black shales organic-rich marls intermediate shallow water Tethyan sections. Thus, oxygen-depleted continental margin, well Ocean, volcanism.
